Enhencer Predictive Storyteller - Data Analytics Live Demo

Enhencer screen is divided into 3 panels.

Left Panel in the analyze screen contains all the variables from the data. The green highlighted variable indicated the particular variable is selected as “Target Variable” for the analyzes. You can simply change the target variable by simply clicking a different variable.

Currently, Customer Status variable is selected. This variable is categorical and has two possible values : Retention and Churn. As you can see, overall customer retention is 54.2% and churn is 45.9%.



In order to obtain deeper insights from the data, users need to use the “Enhance” task. Behind the curtain Enhencer used Machine Learning Algorithms to fetch the deeper insights from the data.

Enhance task can be performed by clicking the “Enhance” button. Enhance lets you to use the machine learning algorithm to dig out the dapper insights from the data.

# Click Enhance button.

Upon clicking the “Enhance” button a new window will pop up named “Select”. You need to select the relevant variables to observe the effects of the selected variables on the target variable.

Blue highlighted variables are the ones that are currently selected for the Enhance task. The deselected variables are represented with the non-highlighted ones.

#Click ALL in Select window to select all variables. Click OK at the bottom of Select Window.




Right side of the analyze screen is reserved for hierarchy view. When “Enhance” is active the tree view is presented to the users. Here Relations and effects of other variables with the target variable can be observed.

Leaf represents a segment and the features above the leaf represents the path to that segment.



Tree View branches from the most important variable effecting customer status to least. Currently, overall is selected which is 4,000 data point size.  The first leaf shows the online usage and the split is 14.9895. As you can see, 26.1% of the customers have less than 14.9 hours online usage and their churn is the highest at 84.9%.



# Select Retention from Target Choice to let Enhencer perform segmentation.


Enhencer will create the segments with the highest lift at the top.

Segments is a powerful tool that shows segments of the target variable and their features. When “Enhance” is active segments can be accessed by simply clicking the “Segments” button. If target variable is categorical like this example then in order to access the segments the user needs to choose one of the target choices form the “Target Choice” drop down menu. For any other variable type, it can be accessed directly.

Right side of the analyze screen in this case shows all the segments available for the target variable. Segments are sorted from highest gain to the lowest gain.

# Click Segment 1 to see its properties. As you can see below, this segment has the highest lift.

The proportion of the target choice in the selected segment compared to the overall population is represented by “Gain & Lift” measures. For this instance, in segment number 1 among 271 customers 90.8% of the customers are retained which is 1.68 times (67.6%) higher than the overall population with 54.2% retention rate.

In Segment 1, you can see the highest retention segment. These are people with 14.9 hours or more online usage, primary social network Facebook, and so on.



You can see which variables effect the target variable most using Effects View.

# Click Effects button.

Effects is a powerful tool that shows the variables that effects the target variable the most. This means among hundreds of different factors from the data these are the ones to affect the target variable the most.

When “Enhance” is active effects can be accessed by simply clicking the “Effects” button. The right side of the screen shows the effects of other variables. The variables are sorted from “High Dependency” to the “Low Dependency”.


When “Effects” is active users can also take benefit of prediction task. In Enhencer you can either predict by simulation or by uploading a new dataset.

In order to take benefit of the “Predict” task user must have [A] “Enhance” active and be on the [B] “Effects” tab.

Effects is a powerful tool that shows the variables that effects the target variable the most. This means among many different factors from the data these are the ones to affect the target variable the most. Moreover, these are the variables that the user can use to predict new cases either by simulating a case from the variable list in the right or uploading a completely new data.

If the target variable is categorical as in this case, Target Choice should be selected. In our example, Retention is already selected.

Prediction can be of two types. One is the classical test data method, where prediction scores are observed for a new dataset after the model is trained. Another is to simulate a very specific case just to observe how the data scores might change or how specific variables contributes to the prediction scores. This example is the latter one, simulating a certain case.

# Select Online Usage above 20 hours and Facebook as the only primary social media account. Click Predict.


Enhencer predicts that you will have 75% chance to retain this type of users.

Example

Suppose that you have integrated your CRM to Enhencer. You want to analyze the customer churn & retention. Suppose that you have a field in your data named customer status which can be "lost" or "existing". Suppose that for a selected group of customers, 48% are lost.

Your CRM holds customer data with many information like age, gender, income, how long / frequent customer uses a service, customer source, customer location, etc. By segmentation, you can find out what segments of customers are retained most and what segments of customers are lost most.

With dozens or even hundreds of properties in your data, it is difficult to intuitively segment the customers. You don't know which categories are significant in customer retention and which are not. Is age a factor? Customer source? Gender?

Below video shows the segments generated by Enhencer. You simply select the value (here customer loyalty) to analyze and Enhencer automatically segments them. Top segments mean which categories of customers are most loyal and bottom segments show the least loyal ones. In the example below, first segment is 110% gain on average which means they are more than twice loyal compared to average loyalty. This segment is :

Salary Amount > 10,397
Age > 29
Gender = Male
Nationality = Japan or UK




The least loyal ones are :
Salary <4,031.
Customer Class = Silver
Nationality = US, Japan, France, UK and Italy.

Locating these significant customer properties among dozens and even hundreds of categories you have in your CRM is difficult if you do not have data analytics. With this info data analytics provides, you can have an action plan (i.e. target high income bucket more or investigate why Silver customers in certain countries are least loyal).

You can also perform predictive analytics in Enhencer on fly. For example, you can select several properties of customers (age range, gender, location, class, nationality, etc ...) and ask Enhencer to predict the probability of this customer to stay loyal to your company.

QlikView 12 Released

Qlik has finally released the new version of its business intelligence platform, QlikView 12. The major change in the QlikView 12 compared to QlikView 11 (which was released in 2011) is the data engine. QlikView now uses the same QIX Associative Data Indexing Engine (QIX) that powers Qlik Sense.

Other than the data engine improvement, QlikView also has enhancements in its security and mobile experience. All functions on web client are now available on touch devices without limitations.  Other changes are improved clustering, native connectors to web services and accessibility of Data Market to QlikView.

Qlik has released a new platform, Qlik Sense, in September 2014, after two years without any major release and the release date of QlikView 12 was since awaited by existing users of the platform.

The last major release of QlikView was QlikView 11 released in 2011. Since the company was releasing a new version in every year the expectation was that Qlik (then called QlikTech) would release QlikView 12 in 2012. But QlikView 12 has not been been released or talked about until late 2015.

In early 2013, Qlik started to talk about a new platform called QlikView.Next. It was expected to be the next QlikView but Qlik released the desktop edition of the product in 2014 and renamed it to Qlik Sense.

QlikView.Next is renamed as Qlik Sense because it is not the next version of QlikView. It is a new business intelligence platform. Its data loading and cleansing engine and expression engine seems to be same as QlikView but front end is entirely different:

QlikView is a tool for situations where you want prepared business applications, i.e. applications created by developers who put a lot of thought into the data model, the layout, the charts and the formulae; and deliver the applications to end-users who consume the applications. We call this Guided Analytics. The end-user has total freedom to explore data, select, drill down and navigate in the information, and can this way discover both questions and answers in the data. The end-user is however limited when it comes to creating new visualizations. This type of situation will without doubt be common for many, many years to come. 
Qlik Sense is a tool for situations where you don’t want to pre-can so much. Instead you want the user to have the freedom to create a layout of his own and in it, new visualizations; charts that the developer couldn’t imagine that the user wants to see. You want Self-service data discovery, which means a much more active, modern, engaged user. In addition, Qlik Sense is much easier to use when you have a touch screen, and is adaptive to different screen sizes and form factors. On the whole, Qlik Sense is a much more modern tool.

Qlik Sense is not QlikView 12
Qlik Sense is not QlikView 12. In fact, Qlik Sense is not QlikView at all.

My estimation was that they would release a new QlikView version named QlikView 12. And  I was hopefully this new server will support both QlikView and Qlik Sense as front end. For example Access Point of QlikView 12 would display both QlikSense and QlikView applications. I wrote since both Qlik Sense and QlikView have common expression and data engine, it should not be difficult". It seems like this feature is not on the roadmap at all.

Tableau 9.0 release date and overview

Tableau Software has finally released the new version of its benchmark setting data visualization and business intelligence platform, Tableau 9.0 today on April 7th 2015. The new version comes with an entirely new experience for Tableau Server, significant performance improvements, new data preparation features, drag-and-drop analytics, updates to mapping and much more.


Tableau 8 has been a phenomenal success[1] for data visualization and business intelligence platform provider Tableau Software after the release of Tableau 8.3, everybody was waiting for the new version : Tableau 9. Tableau 9 release date is postponed a few times. In Tableau Conference 2013, the expectation was that Tableau 8.1 would be released in fall 2013, Tableau 8.2 in winter 2014 and Tableau 9.0 later in 2014. Tableau 9.0 release date is later pushed to Q1 2015 and in March one more time to April 2015.

But this is a release worth waiting. There are many significant improvements in Tableau 9.0 over Tableau 8.3 which makes already powerful Tableau Software more competitive.

Tableau User Experience Improvements

Ease of use and flawless data analysis process has always been in the core of Tableau and the company is wisely investing more in this core strength with exiting new features. One of the most significant new feature in the front-end is ad-hoc calculations. You can now write expressions directly on the rows and columns shelves or mark cards with a simple double click. You can later drag these ad-hoc calculations to Data Window to make them reusable calculations.

A new Analytics Pane in Tableau 9 makes common techniques such as reference lines, bands, totals, trend lines and forecasts readily available by a simple drag-and-drop. Another feature related to Tableau's analytics capabilities is Instant Analytics which provides an interactive experience for comparing summary information about subset of marks to all marks in the view.

New level of details calculation is another exiting new feature which allows you to create arbitrary aggregates in charts without complex and cumbersome expressions. For example, with this new feature, you can easily calculate average sale per customer in each time period by a simple, nested Level of Details Calculation (LOD). LOD syntax also allows you to create fixed values not effected by level of detail in the charts.

Data Connection and Preparation Improvements

Tableau 9.0 now supports Kerberos authentication for Microsoft SQL Server, SQL Server Analysis Service and Cloudera Impala. adds data extraction API for Mac OS and offers new and improved data connectors such as SPSS, SAS and R.

Recently, almost every Tableau release adds more data preparation functionality. Tableau 9.0 is not an exception. Tableau now can detect the range of data in MS Excel files, unpivot tables (converts a cross-tab table to straight table), split data in multiple fields.

Tableau 9 Performance Improvements

Tableau data engine, the in-memory analytics database of Tableau platform, was introduced in Tableau 6 and went through performance improvements since than. But Tableau 9 seems the be the biggest jump. In the presentation, a bar-chart aggregated from 173 million rows of data took 0.7 seconds in Tableau 9 compared to  7 seconds performance of Tableau 8.3 (10x faster)!

As this individual query performance is not enough. Tableau 9 data engine also introduces parallel queries concept. If you have a Tableau dashboard with 3 charts and you do something to trigger a query (i.e. filtering dashboard), each chart queries the database one after another in sequence. In the presentation, a 3 chart dashboard took 9.5 seconds to load. In Tableau 9 it takes 1.1 seconds. Not only individual queries are faster, they also run parallel (provided that underlying database supports parallel queries).

And then comes query fusion. Even if you run parallel queries, why to run a the same query twice if two charts in the view has similar queries which can be run once. Tableau Query Fusion looks at the dashboards and finds way to simply the queries into simple queries.

Suppose that you have two sheets in a dashboard : Sum of Rides per Hour and Average Tip per Hour. In Tableau 8.3, these two will fire 2 individual queries (in sequence) to database. But in Tableau 9, because these two has the same level of details, they will be fused into a single query and run fast. A sample run for 173 million rows takes 3.7 seconds in Tableau 8.3 but only 1.7 seconds in Tableau 9 thanks to query fusion.

So Tableau 9 offers faster queries, parallel queries and thanks to Query Fusion, less queries. And thanks to new External Query Catching, it also offers no queries. Tableau 9 will cash queries in server and desktop and run no queries to database if there is no chance there. In an example run, a 3 sheet dashboard running 9.7 seconds in Tableau 8.3 took only 0.2 seconds to run. 50x improvements.

One of the most desired feature for Tableau 9 is visual ETL (Extraction Transformation and Load) functionality for data quality, validation and cleaning (and data modeling if possible).  Tableau 8.2's "visual data window" seems to be the first step to that direction but we will wait and see if this would be a new feature. Although there are very powerful visual ETL tools which can work seamlessly with Tableau such as Alteryx and Clover ETL, it would be nice to see some more features in this domain with Tableau 9.

On the predictive analytics domain, we expect more functionality in Tableau such as more predictive models and control in newly introduced forecasting feature and better integration with R (current Tableau version can do 4 functions passing parameters to R Server).

We will update this post as more information is revealed about Tableau 9.
